Apple overtaken by Samsung

Samsung Electronics overtook Apple to recapture the title of world’s top smartphone maker by volume in the first quarter of 2015, research firm Strategy Analytics said on Wednesday.

It said Samsung shipped 83.2 million smartphones worldwide and captured 24 per cent market share in the quarter, down from 31 per cent a year earlier, but better than Apple’s 18 per cent.

I personally believe it’s because the Apple haven’t left much from their original iPhone idea and haven’t actually made that many changes. With each model being released, leaks or rumours have already spread on the news about the next model. And usually features these features are already available on other competitor devices such as Samsung.

Downloading/Streaming Movies or TV Shows in Australia

So recently, the Australian federal government has enforced a policy for all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) required to send notices if you’re suspected of torrenting movies, TV shows and other copyright material in an attempt to stop piracy. Only residential internet plans are monitored for now, so business plans and Mobile networks are not monitored at this point in time.

If reported by ISPs, you will receive a warning, either by email or mail mentioning that there was illegal activity coming from your IP Address and in cases where you are not a first time offender, you may receive a shocking infringement notice with fines up to $4000. In studies, most Australians say they only torrent Movies and TV shows because there is no other legitimate way of getting the content or it is too overpriced and in cases 300% more expensive than other countries.

Because of all this, there has been a big rise with subscriptions to Netflix/Stan/Presto and other services such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Smart DNS services. These services are now very convenient with most of them having a free trial period as well. Even end users that don’t have much experience with computers can now figure out how to use these cheap VPN services to hide their IP addresses so they can download torrents/stream movies without being able to be caught legally.

So do you think Australia is heading in the right direction with the new anti-piracy law? Or is it just something that will push Australians into doing the way they did things differently?

Everyone has their own views on this, but we’ll just have to see how things turn out in the near future because of how these large corporations are trying to get payments from individuals for obtaining their content in a different manner as opposed to other countries that don’t have these laws.
